The Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) manufactured by IRICO is a suburban train capable of coupling up to three trainsets (totaling 12 cars). It can transport up to 1,008 seated passengers with a minimal operating crew. The standard configuration for commercial service consists of four cars—arranged as Mc–T–T–Mc—with a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h.
Each Mc car is equipped with a diesel traction engine and transmission assembly, an auxiliary generator set, a passenger compartment, an independent driver’s cab, an air braking system with an air compressor, and two double-leaf sliding “plug doors” on each side of the body. The T car features an independent generator, an air braking system, a water cooling system, a restroom, a passenger area, and double-leaf electric sliding doors on each side.
Currently, this product is in service on several suburban lines across Iran. The “Railbus” manufacturing technology was transferred to IRICO by Hyundai Rotem, and the final product has been customized to meet customer requirements through collaboration with European partners.
Technical Specifications
Future improvement plans envisage increasing the train’s operating speed from 120 km/h to 160 km/h and upgrading the system from diesel (DMU) to fully electric (EMU) technology. These initiatives are designed to enhance energy efficiency, reduce emissions, increase passenger capacity, and align with international rail transport standards. The objective of these developments is to create a modern, efficient, and sustainable fleet capable of meeting the country’s growing rail network demands and to establish the necessary infrastructure for future integration with Iran’s high-speed rail lines.
